What does good leadership look like? The most basic leadership skills start with you – you must be organised, thoughtful, self-disciplined and willing to lead by example.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leadership succeeds when it shows others how to grow and push for success. Your team should look at you and think, \u201cIf they can do it, I can, too.”<\/p>\n

Recent work by Gallup identified four domains or areas of leadership strength – executing, influencing, relationship building and strategic thinking.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Each member of a team has their own unique strengths; the most successful teams possess a wide range of skills and abilities and have a particularly high representation of these four domains in their team.<\/p>\n

You may not be so well rounded as the leader, but your team certainly should be.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are many different styles of leadership and although each leader\u2019s approach to the end goal may be different, they all get there in the end.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t have to be a carbon copy of a leader you admire and respect – you simply need to know your own strengths and preferences and then utilise the team\u2019s skills to fill in the gaps.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What do leaders do that makes a difference? While you discover your strengths, what practical steps can you take in the meantime?<\/p>\n

Here are four suggestions:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. BRIEF YOUR TEAM<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brief your team using \u2018SMEAC\u2019 \u2013 a briefing tool used by the armed forces to give clear direction and check understanding.<\/p>\n

Good leaders always brief even the simplest of procedures like this<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\u2022 S<\/strong>ituation or Background (what is the current situation?).
\n\u2022 M<\/strong>ission or Objectives (what do you need to do?).
\n\u2022 E<\/strong>xecution or Implementation (how will we do it? Not to be confused with Mission).
\n\u2022 A<\/strong>ny questions (what don\u2019t we know?).
\n\u2022 C<\/strong>heck understanding (ask them questions by using the three Ps \u2013 Pose the question, Pause to give them time to think about the answer, Pounce and ask someone the question).<\/p>\n

2. GET STARTED<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leaders take action and make decisions. Sir John Harvey-Jones MBE {Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy, then Chairman of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI)} believed in \u2018speed rather than direction\u2019, on the assumption that \u2018once travelling, a company can veer and tack towards the ultimate objective\u2019.<\/p>\n

It is easier to change direction once you have got going, so get started.<\/p>\n

3. ROUGHLY RIGHT IS BETTER THAN PRECISELY WRONG<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a leader you have to keep in mind the bigger picture to make sure everyone stays focused on the end results.<\/p>\n

It is easy to become distracted with detail and allow it to detract from your purpose.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is comfort in the accuracy of the details, but your role as a leader is to maintain focus on the bigger picture and the required outcome.<\/p>\n

4. BE KIND<\/strong><\/p>\n

A leader needs to motivate their team, even in the face of adversity, to persuade them to keep going.<\/p>\n

Everyone needs encouragement – ask yourself \u2018what can I say that will be encouraging?\u2019<\/p>\n

Insight from Leaders <\/strong><\/p>\n

These are their top tips<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Set a deadline for your project. People work more effectively if they know there\u2019s a point of accountability coming up.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Leadership is not a \u2018tick box\u2019 management list of things to go through.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Network, network, network!<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> Stick your head above the parapet and be seen.<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong> You must be able to take all kinds of feedback, so you must be reachable and receptive.<\/p>\n

6.<\/strong> Perfect planning is impossible. Drive for results by taking action.<\/p>\n

7.<\/strong> Make a decision and start. Stop meeting about it and just start.<\/p>\n

8.<\/strong> Just ask. There is always a budget, always more resource and sometimes I can\u2019t give it away as no-one has asked!<\/p>\n

9.<\/strong> Lead by example and trust your colleagues. You cannot control and manage everything, and they need to learn leadership skills, too.<\/p>\n

10. <\/strong>Write \u2018thank you\u2019 letters (a forgotten art) \u2013 people like the recognition.<\/p>\n

Leadership is not about one particular style or an approach to leading others.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every situation is different and so are the people involved.<\/p>\n

Teams need and appreciate good leadership, but you have to start somewhere, so perhaps volunteer for a role that is slightly less critical to begin with in order to develop your leadership skills.<\/p>\n
